Complete DestructionThe collapse of the Canterbury TV studios is evident by comparison of before and after images. A lot of the search-and-rescue effort was concentrated at this site where almost 100 hundred people lost their lives. By the time the after photo was taken, removal of the rubble is well advanced. The ground photo shows that the site had been completely cleared by April 22nd. Canterbury TV resumed broadcasting on 18 April 2011 at a new building in Christchurch.

Very Heavy DamageRubble surrounding the West façade indicates major local collapse. The before image indicates that it was the towers to north and south of the façade which collapsed. The ground photo indicates the extent of damage. The remainder of the building appears intact.

Rooflines straight and intact
Large amount of debris on west side of left house, however wall looks intact (might be a dividing wall)
LiquefactionLarge quantities of silt visible on the road and between the two terraces indicate that serious liquefaction occurred in this area. All these buildings were red-tagged by April, suggesting non- repairable damage, but this damage is not visible using a comparison of before and after images.

This area, also close to the Avon River, is another area where the post-event image shows a substantial amount of silt (both roads) and flooding(Retreat Road E-W) indicating serious liquefaction. No damage to the buildings can be seen in the post-event image, but the foundation of the building shown in the photo had settled by about 20cm at the front of the building relative to the back. Demolition and replacement is likely to be needed.

Lateral spreading of river banks can clearly be seen on River Road to the north of the river without aid of the pre-event image. Liquefaction is also evident from the silt mounds in the cul-de-sac south of the river. No damage to buildings is visible.
